DIY Flooring: Professional Quality Products for the Hands-On Homeowner

Not every flooring project needs a professional installer — and at The Carpet Tree we respect that. Whether you're an experienced DIYer or a first timer who has done your homework, we're here to make sure you have the right product for your project.

Buy Your Flooring From Us, Install It Yourself

When you purchase your flooring from The Carpet Tree you get access to the same professional quality products we use in our own installations — not the builder grade products you'll find at a big box store. That means higher quality materials, better results, and a floor you'll be proud of for years to come.

Which Flooring Types Are Most DIY Friendly?

Some flooring types are better suited for DIY installation than others. Here's a quick guide:

  • Luxury Vinyl Plank & Tile — One of the most popular DIY choices. Click lock installation is straightforward and forgiving for first timers. No glue, no nails, no special tools required in most cases

  • Laminate — Similar click lock installation to LVP and very DIY friendly. Lightweight planks make it easy to handle solo

  • Engineered Hardwood — Can be DIY installed depending on the product and method. Floating installation is the most DIY friendly option

  • Ceramic & Porcelain Tile — More challenging and requires proper subfloor preparation, tile setting tools, and grouting skills. Best for experienced DIYers

  • Carpet — We generally recommend professional installation for carpet to ensure proper stretching and a quality finished result

We're Here to Help — In the Store

Our expertise is in helping you choose the right product for your project and your skill level. When you come into our showroom we'll help you choose the right product and discuss what tools and supplies you'll likely need. Subfloor preparation is almost always part of any flooring installation — the specifics however depend on your existing subfloor condition and can only be determined by whoever is doing the installation. We recommend discussing subfloor preparation with your installer before you begin.

For DIY projects we ask that you or your installer measure the space accurately before you come in. We'll need your measurements to calculate how much material to order — and getting that right from the start saves you from costly shortages or excess. If measuring your space feels overwhelming we're happy to recommend our professional installation team instead.

A Note on Manufacturer Warranties

Before you decide to install your flooring yourself it's worth checking the manufacturer's warranty requirements. Some manufacturers require professional installation as a condition of their warranty coverage. If a warranty is important to you — and it should be — ask us about the warranty terms before you buy. We want you to make an informed decision that protects your investment long term.

A Word of Advice

The most common DIY flooring mistakes we see are skipping subfloor preparation and underestimating how much material is needed. Come talk to us before you buy — a few minutes of conversation can save you a lot of frustration and expense down the road.

When to Call the Pros

DIY flooring can be a rewarding project — but knowing when to hand it off to a professional is just as important as knowing how to do it yourself. We recommend calling our professional installation team if:

  • You're unsure about the condition of your subfloor

  • Your existing floor has multiple layers that need to be removed

  • You're working with an uneven or damaged subfloor that needs repair

  • The installation involves intricate cuts, transitions, or unusual room shapes

  • You're installing tile which requires proper setting, leveling, and grouting skills

One important note — address any subfloor concerns before installation begins. Professional installers are skilled at installing flooring, not correcting problems created by a partially completed DIY project. Getting the right help at the right time protects your investment and ensures a quality finished result.
